初伝 — THE FIRST DEGREE

Shoden

The foundation. Before you can heal others, you must learn to heal yourself. This degree opens the central channel permanently and teaches you to read the body's own energetic language.

The First Attunement

The Level 1 attunement (Reiju) is a sacred energetic initiation performed by a Reiki Master. During this ceremony, the Master opens the student's crown, heart, and palm chakras permanently — creating a permanent channel through which universal Ki can flow. Once attuned, this channel never closes. You are a Reiki practitioner for life.

After the attunement, you will enter a 21-day purification period — mirroring Dr. Usui's own 21-day fast on Mount Kurama. During these three weeks, your energy body recalibrates. You may experience emotional releases (sudden crying, vivid dreams, old memories surfacing), physical detox symptoms (fatigue, headaches, flu-like symptoms), and heightened sensory perception (hands tingling, seeing colors during meditation). These are normal. They are the blockages dissolving.

Gassho Meditation — The Heart of Daily Practice

Before any Reiki self-treatment, you must center your awareness through Gassho (合掌) — the prayer position. This is not religious. It is a bioenergetic technique that unifies the left and right hemispheres of the brain and concentrates Ki in the palm chakras.

1

Sit in a comfortable position. Spine upright, not rigid. Close your eyes. Bring your palms together at the center of your chest (Anahata chakra).

2

Begin slow, deep breathing — 4 seconds inhale through the nose, 4 seconds hold, 6 seconds exhale through the mouth. Focus your entire awareness on the point where your middle fingertips touch.

3

Recite the Five Principles silently: "Just for today, I will not be angry. Just for today, I will not worry. I will be grateful. I will work honestly. I will be kind to every living thing."

4

Within 5-10 minutes, you will feel warmth, tingling, or pulsing in your palms. This is Ki activating. You are ready to begin self-treatment.

Joshin Kokyu Ho — The Reiki Breathing Method

This breathing technique is unique to Usui Reiki. It concentrates Ki in the Hara (lower abdomen) — the body's energetic battery — before distributing it through the hands during treatment.

1

Inhale through the nose. Visualize white light entering through the crown of your head. Guide it downward through your central channel to the Hara point (2 inches below the navel). Feel the belly expand.

2

Hold for 3-4 seconds. Feel the Ki compress and intensify in the Hara. It grows dense, warm, and vibrantly alive.

3

Exhale through the mouth. As you breathe out, visualize the compressed Ki expanding outward from the Hara through your entire body simultaneously — radiating through every cell, every organ, every extremity. Feel your hands pulse with energy.

4

Repeat for 10 minutes. By the end, your hands should feel noticeably warm, tingling, or magnetically charged. You are now energetically loaded and ready for treatment.

The 12 Self-Treatment Hand Positions

Hold each position for 3-5 minutes, or until the heat/tingling sensation fades (indicating the Ki transfer is complete for that area). Always follow this exact sequence — it mirrors the descending flow of Ki through the body.

Byōsen Scanning — Reading the Body's Energy Map

Byōsen (病腺) means "disease line." It is the technique of slowly moving your hands over the body (2-3 inches above the skin) to detect areas of energetic disturbance. When your palms hover over a blockage, you will feel distinct sensations:

  • Level 1 (Onnetsu): Gentle warmth. Minor blockage. 3 minutes of treatment resolves it.
  • Level 2 (Atsui Onnetsu): Intense heat. Moderate blockage. 5-10 minutes needed.
  • Level 3 (Piri Piri): Tingling, pins-and-needles. Significant energetic disturbance. 10-15 minutes.
  • Level 4 (Hibiki): Pulsing, throbbing sensation. Deep, chronic blockage. Multiple sessions needed.
  • Level 5 (Itai): Pain or cold in your hands. Severe, long-standing blockage or external attachment. Requires advanced intervention.

Practice scanning your own body daily after Gassho meditation. Within 30 days, you will develop reliable sensitivity to energetic imbalances.

Kenyoku — Dry Bathing (Post-Treatment Cleansing)

After every self-treatment session, you must clear the residual energy from your hands and aura using Kenyoku (乾浴). This prevents cross-contamination between sessions and seals your auric field.

1

Place your right hand on your left shoulder. Sweep diagonally down across your chest to your right hip. Breathe out sharply.

2

Place your left hand on your right shoulder. Sweep diagonally down across your chest to your left hip. Breathe out sharply.

3

Repeat the right-to-left sweep one more time. Then stroke from the inside of each wrist outward to the fingertips (both arms). Shake your hands vigorously three times. You are sealed.
